GOING TO GREG’S HOUSE

Where my journey as an improvising cellist began.

When I was 12 years old, my best friend was Greg.
Greg was a drummer, and all the jams happened at his house. Guitar players would show up. Bass players. Singers. Everyone brought the instrument they knew.
I showed up with my cello.

I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING

The truth is, I had no idea what I was doing.

I didn’t know how to improvise.
I didn’t know chords or scales. Nobody was teaching me how to play blues, rock, or anything outside the classical world.

So I did the only thing I knew how to do.

” I listened. “

MY EARS BECAME MY TEACHER

When the band started playing, I searched for a note that sounded good.
Sometimes it was one note. Sometimes it was two or three.
When the chord changed, I’d move to another note if I needed to.
Little by little, my ears began teaching me what no book had ever explained.

That’s where my journey as an improvising cellist began.
