About Fred

I started playing cello when I was 10 years old and fell in love with its voice. I was classically trained by an excellent teacher, but at the same time I was listening to rock, blues, and jazz and discovering that the cello could speak in ways that went far beyond the traditional repertoire.
After a serious injury, I felt called to become a full-time cellist. I devoted my life to playing, teaching, improvising, and exploring the endless possibilities of this remarkable instrument.
I’ve never been interested in putting music into boxes. My journey has been about finding my own voice on the cello and encouraging other cellists to find theirs.

Learn
the Blues on Cello

Learn the Blues on Cello
Blues is one of the first styles of music I fell in love with.

The blues is uniquely American music, born in the United States from African American musical traditions and European influences. It developed its own language a distinctive scale, phrasing, rhythms, chord structures, and forms.

And the beautiful thing is that you can learn that language on the cello.
This is where you can begin.

Beyond Classical

Classical music is a beginning not the final destination.

The cello may be one of the most expressive instruments ever made. Why limit it to just one musical language?

Learn how to use your cello to play the music you love blues, jazz, rock, Celtic, folk, Latin, and so much more.

Going To Greg's House

Find Your Own Voice

When I was 12, I showed up at my friend Greg’s house with my cello. The room was filled with guitars, bass, drums, and singers and I had no idea how to improvise. So I did the only thing I knew how to do: I listened as I played.
That’s where my journey as an improvising cellist began.
Now you can come to Greg’s house, too. Pick up your cello, open your ears, and join the jam.
